CASE STUDY: PRINTING PRICING SYSTEM

Information management tools needed to create pricing

Summary

BDT designed a three-stage automated system to ensure accurate printing service estimates for customers.

  • Reduced labor costs and response turnaround time from five business days to one business day or less
  • Increased competitive edge internally and externally due to rapid turnaround
  • Supplied consistent pricing based on accepted cost accounting guidelines

Introduction

The advanced technology division of a large document technology company wanted a consistent process for estimating personalized printing service (PPS) requests from customers.

The Issue

Creating the pricing process involved incorporating complicated cost accounting calculations, which the PPS manager preferred that the estimators not have to learn. The PPS manager hired Bell Design Technologies, Inc. (BDT) to offer a solution for creating estimates based on cost accounting calculations.

The Solution

BDT worked with the PPS manager and the cost accounting manager to learn how the company’s pricing worked. Then, BDT designed a three-stage pricing system application to ensure pricing was calculated accurately and automatically according to pre-established unit pricing entered into the application.

  • Stage 1  (Input): The estimator entered the printing request specifics into the pricing system.
  • Stage 2 (Process): The pricing system application generated the printing request cost based on the cost accounting calculations stored within the system.
  • Stage 3 (Output): The pricing system printed out a professionally designed estimate ready for delivery to the requesting customer.

In addition, the estimators received a two-sided job aid. One side included a list of the required input fields with corresponding definitions and examples of data to enter. The other side contained a sample of the printed estimate.

The Result

The improved pricing system resulted in:

  • Reduced labor costs and response turnaround time from five business days to one business day or less
  • Increased competitive edge internally and externally due to rapid turnaround
  • Consistent pricing based on accepted cost accounting guidelines
